Why and How We Sing

Why and How We Sing

Singing together is a culturally odd thing to do. I mean, try to imagine any other time and places where you stand with a group of people and sing songs. Where does that happen? Sometimes at a birthday party. Or you might stumble through Auld Lang Syne on New Year’s Eve. Or maybe at the seventh inning stretch when someone’s consumed two or three $14 beers. Or karaoke—my personal nightmare.

But imagine going to your favorite coffee shop, standing up, and saying, “Let’s all stand and sing together!” You might not be asked to leave, but you certainly wouldn’t get much participation.

Singing, however, has always been a vital part of Christian worship. So vital, in fact, that today for many, singing has—errantly—become the definition of worship.

In Ephesians chapters 4&5, St. Paul devotes significant ink to describing how we ought to live together as a community of faith. In this week’s Epistle reading, he writes specifically about why and how we sing when we’re together in worship.

Why and how we sing, this Sunday at 10. And as always, we’ll (actually) sing, read the Scriptures, pray, and celebrate the Eucharist together.

See you Sunday.

Children’s Formation Volunteers:

We are in great need of once-a-month volunteers to help in children’s formation (the class that takes place Sundays during the sermon, Nicene Creed, and Prayers of the People). We need those who can teach our curriculum, and those who can simply help—our children’s safety protocols require at least two adults in each class. This is a great opportunity for couples to serve together. Contact Karissa (karissa.simmons@redeemerannapolis.org).

Seeking Our Neighbors’ Flourishing Together

We have the opportunity to participate in a group project at Historic London Town and Gardens, Saturday, October 15, 10AM-1PM. The work will include: trail building (laying gravel paths, edging, stabilizing); invasive removal (removing ivy, bamboo, or other seasonal weeds); and, site restoration (restoring an area back to the way it was through invasive removal and bed amendments. It’ll be fun to work together. You can register online here.

If Saturday doesn’t work for you, there are also weekday options available for individuals. Contact Patrick (patrick.finn@redeemerannapolis.org).

1082 Epping Forest Road, Annapolis

Please continue in prayer daily for our Vestry’s discernment as we consider this property as the potential site for Redeemer’s permanent home. We will discuss this as a Vestry Sunday.
