The Greatest Suspicion
The Greatest Suspicion
British philosopher and psychologist Cordelia Fine writes in A Mind of Its Own, “Your poor deluded gray matter sees what it expects to see, not what is actually there. The moral? Treat with the greatest suspicion the proof of your own eyes.”
The reality is—and neuroscientists are just relatively recently coming to terms with this—the human mind and heart are bent toward deception.
But this isn’t new at all. In fact, it’s why the prophet Jeremiah wrote, “The heart is deceitful above all things … who can understand it?” and St. Paul admonishes, “Test all things.”
This week’s reading’s explore both deception’s root and remedy … which is a really good place to start Lent.
See you Sunday.

Vestry Nominee—John Remein has been nominated to serve in a recently vacant seat on Redeemer’s Vestry.
John grew up in Maryland and came to faith at an early age while attending a Christian Reformed Church. He graduated from Calvin College (now University), earning a BS in electrical engineering. After a missions internship in Oklahoma, he earned an MDiv from Denver Seminary. While living in Colorado, John first experienced Anglicanism, which led to him attending an Anglican church when he moved to northern Virginia. In 2019, John married Christy. They moved to Annapolis in 2021 and soon found Redeemer. At Redeemer, John is perhaps best known for being the father of the twins. John works remotely for a small defense contractor doing data analysis, modeling, and simulation. In his free time, he enjoys home projects, repairs, cooking, traveling, and camping.
