The Feast of All Saints

The Feast of All Saints

This Sunday is All Saints’ Day. Celebrated yearly on November 1, it’s the only “Principal Feast” in the Christian Year that can also be observed on the first Sunday following that date, though this year it falls on Sunday.

All Saints’ Day commemorates the intercommunion of living and dead Christians throughout time, renowned and unknown. It honors the “great cloud of witnesses” we read of in Hebrews 11-12, the “communion of saints” in The Apostles’ Creed, and the “white-robed army of martyrs” pictured in this week’s first reading.

Sunday is also the International Day of Prayer for the persecuted church throughout the world. We, of course, pray for persecuted believers every Sunday in our Prayers of the People, but this week we’re going to give more focus these brothers and sisters—these saints—in our teaching and in a brief interview with a brother who’s just spent some time serving in a country where it’s very difficult to be a follower of Christ.

See you Sunday.

And Speaking of Saints…

In City of God (early 5th century), St. Augustine taught that citizens of the kingdom of God, taking their dual citizenship seriously, should also be the best citizens of whatever society they inhabit. If you haven’t already, please vote Tuesday, November 3.

Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery, a beautiful song that will be part of our worship Sunday isn’t “new” to us, but it’s been about nine months since we’ve sung it together. You can reacquaint yourself with it here.
