Sometimes It’s Not Nothing
Sometimes It’s Not Nothing
I have a friend who likes to say that Philippians 4:6, “Be anxious for nothing…” is the one command in Scripture that takes absolutely no effort for him to keep. Because that’s what he’s almost always anxious for. Nothing.
I can relate to that. Maybe you can too?
But sometimes it’s not nothing, and our hearts get troubled. That’s not necessarily a sign of weak faith as much as a sign of being human.
In this week’s Gospel reading from John 14, Jesus is eating his last supper with his disciples—the men who’d followed him for three years, left everything for him, staked their lives and futures on him. And in the course of that evening, Jesus has told them that one of them is a traitor, that one of them is going to deny him three times that very night, and that he’s leaving.
Their world is coming apart in real time, and they’re genuinely anxious and troubled. And Jesus looks at them and says “Let not your hearts be troubled.”
But why? How? That’s what we’ll explore Sunday.
