Sharing In His Joy

Sharing in His Joy

In our reading from Isaiah this week, we encounter an oracle of promise. The Spirit will anoint a proclaimer of good news who will transform conquest into triumph. The vision of transformation is given to the afflicted, the brokenhearted, those who mourn. We may hear these words as applicable to all people, and while that’s understandable, we should not miss the fact that they are given to Israel, first. The promise of renewal is not vague or general, but specifically aimed at the recovery of what was lost to them.

That is important for us because it reminds us that God is faithful and keeps his promises. It also emphasizes that God does not ignore or forget what is important to us. He attends to us by reclaiming what was lost and rebuilding what was ruined.

Even more, he invites into the process as engaged and active participants so that we share in his joy.

I look forward to hearing Isaiah’s prophecy together with you this Sunday.
