Prayer
Prayer
The Lord's Prayer is the pole to which all other prayers are tethered. It's the prayer Jesus prayed himself. The fact that these words were on Jesus’ lips creates a close connection with him when they are also on ours. We pray with him, as well as in and through him.
The Lord's prayer orients us to what is vital and causes us to participate in it: the fatherly character of God, the holiness of his nature, the extent of his kingly domain, our embodied experiences and vulnerabilities, our shared life together. Each word and phrase is a door into a larger room to explore and experience; we think we understand it and then we encounter more as our lives unfold within its ongoing repetitions.
Deeply rooted in its Jewish context, Jesus' prayer resonates with Israel's vocation and now ours as we, too, become a "royal priesthood" (to quote Peter (I Peter 2:9) and John (Rev. 1:6)) in which intercession becomes an important ministry for all of us.
I'm glad that on Sunday we'll have the opportunity both to study and to practice the Lord's prayer, such a pillar of our Anglican liturgy and daily prayer.
