Planting and Uprooting

Planting and Uprooting

I tried to grow tomatoes in Wisconsin. We lived about 100 yards from Lake Michigan which meant we were always a few degrees cooler than everyone else. I found a sunny spot in our yard and tended the tomato plants faithfully. They lived, they grew, they flowered…but very slowly. Finally—a tomato! A big, beautiful tomato. Then another. And another. And then—frost!! Oh no. The plants took so long to grow in our cooler climate that by the time they produced fruit, the season was over and they died. Well, I eventually gave up and tried other things with varying degrees of success (and mostly failure).

Growing vegetables and fruits requires experience, endurance, knowledge, and the wisdom to know when to plant and when to uproot. It’s a great metaphor for human nature and one our

Lord’s favorites.

In this week’s lectionary, we encounter the parable of the barren fig tree, a metaphor for judgement and mercy. Or, if your kids are interested, you can tell them it’s about poop.

See you on Sunday,
