Paying Attention

Paying Attention

We’ve all heard that familiarity is dangerous because it breeds contempt. But what if the real danger of familiarity isn’t so much that it breeds contempt, but that it breeds just that: familiarity?

Things we hear or see all the time—even critically important things—can become so familiar that we stop actually paying attention. Think about the last time you were actually absorbed in what the flight attendant said while taxiing to the runway.

There’s a vital part of Christian liturgy—just a few words so important that Jesus said every other word in the Bible hangs from them—the church has repeated them week after week almost without exception. Year after year. Decade after decade. For millennia. Words so familiar it’s easy to just stop really paying attention.

This week, though, we will.

See you Sunday.
