On the Outside

On the Outside

I'm Nobody! Who Are You? is one of Emily Dickinson’s best-known poems because it addresses what literary critic and Yale professor Harold Bloom calls “a universal feeling of being on the outside.” It begins:

I’m nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us—don’t tell!
They’d banish us, you know.

Ever been on the outside?

Probably few people knew that feeling more keenly than the woman in this week’s Gospel reading. Because she was. On the outside. To almost everyone.

I look forward to exploring this beautiful story with you Sunday.

Vestry Nominee

John Remein has been nominated to serve in a recently vacant seat on Redeemer’s Vestry.

John grew up in Maryland and came to faith at an early age while attending a Christian Reformed Church. He graduated from Calvin College (now University), earning a BS in electrical engineering. After a missions internship in Oklahoma, he earned an MDiv from Denver Seminary. While living in Colorado, John first experienced Anglicanism, which led to him attending an Anglican church when he moved to northern Virginia. In 2019, John married Christy. They moved to Annapolis in 2021 and soon found Redeemer. At Redeemer, John is perhaps best known for being the father of the twins. John works remotely for a small defense contractor doing data analysis, modeling, and simulation. In his free time, he enjoys home projects, repairs, cooking, traveling, and camping.

If you know of a reason John should not serve in this position, please contact Steve Wishart before Sunday.
