Oil For My Lamp
A parable that gave me fits for years is the “Parable of the Ten Virgins” Jesus tells in Matthew 25:1-13. For years, I kind of beat my head against that parable to no avail. I mean, its tone is very urgent, and its conclusion is quite shocking, but it’s “therefore” just seems so mundane and esoteric…and candidly, a bit of a challenge to preach compellingly: “Watch therefore.”
Something beautiful I was witness to 16 years ago, however, gave me some profounder insight into the nature of “watching” and what I believe we might take away from it—what’s at the heart of what Jesus was saying. And there’s nothing mundane or esoteric about it at all. It’s actually quite gritty and embodied.
