More to the Story
More to the Story
Occasionally, it’s good to remind ourselves that the titles we find in our Bibles describing a paragraph or a section were not original to the text. They were supplied by Bible publishers. So while we appreciate their aid to reading, they can affect our interpretation or attention to details.
Such may be the case with the “Parable of the Good Samaritan.” It is such an incredible parable! There is an intriguing cast of characters and enticing details. Jesus is masterful in his dialogue with the lawyer and evades his inauthentic agenda. Rather, Jesus pulls the lawyer into a disorienting encounter with the enemy that must have shocked him and anyone else listening in. The Samaritan is certainly at the center of the parable, but there is more to the story that we can explore together.
Sometimes engaging with God is disorienting. We bring a lot of baggage into the relationship. God wants us to participate, to join, to walk with him, to take the baggage and set our hands free for other things.
I look forward to getting into the details with you on Sunday and finding some surprises that will connect us more deeply with the Gospel.
