In The Dark
In The Dark
This week’s Gospel records a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus … a religious insider. A Pharisee, and a member of Israel’s ruling council, he was also among Israel’s cultural elite.
He comes to Jesus literally “by night”, which usually carries a symbolic overtone of spiritual darkness elsewhere in John. In other words, Nicodemus is metaphorically “in the dark” despite the fact that he was mature, highly successful, completely pulled together, and respectable.
And although he was a Pharisee, he wasn’t an ill-tempered dogmatist, contrary to what the word for most Christians connotes. He comes to Jesus, who has no formal rabbinic training, no credentials, and calls him Rabbi. Which, I think, shows a certain curiosity and generosity of spirit.
And though Jesus is increasingly unpopular among Nicodemus’s contemporaries, he comes to Jesus and essentially asks, apparently genuinely, “Can we talk?”
It’s a fascinating and crucial conversation—for all of us—and I look forward to exploring it with you Sunday.
See you then.
