Call Signs
Call Signs
In aviation generally—but especially military aviation—pilots are given call signs...nicknames that are used from that time forward, for good or for bad, as a substitute for their given name. In many ways, it shapes their identity. But it’s not just a random name, and it’s not chosen by the pilot. It’s conferred on them by others, and always says something unique about them, or something—most often embarrassing or stupid—they’ve done. For example:
I have a prior Marine friend whose last name is Mouw. His call sign is “Chairman”. Think about it.
One of my former flight students, a female, is called “Drone” Why? Because she always flies an unmanned aircraft (which may be a just touch over the line, but she wears it proudly).
Another former flight student unfortunately had ears of dramatically unequal size, which earned him the call sign “Nemo” (OK, that one’s just mean).
One of my best friends, a retired Air Force Colonel (and a big, muscular man) earned his call sign upon his first practice parachute jump at the US Air Force Academy. His descent was…rapid. He’s been known since as “Brick”.
Both this week’s Old Testament and Gospel readings contain stories involving two people who both, early on, had identity-changing nicknames conferred upon them, too. Names that said something, not about an immutable quality, or something embarrassing or shameful in the past…but about who, by the kindness and patience of God they would eventually become. Even though there wasn’t much evidence for it at the time.
See you Sunday.
