By Faith
By Faith
The 11th chapter of Hebrews—this week’s epistle reading—is often called “The Hall of Faith”, and it points to a universal human reality. Everyone—every man, woman, and child, lives “by faith”—regardless of whether we’re religious or irreligious, Christian or non-Christian.
We all trust in something or someone to help us make sense of life. The question is not whether we have faith—that’s a given—but in what or whom we put our faith. For some of us, faith may be like positive thinking, a hopeful optimism in ourselves or our circumstances. Tragically, more and more in our culture as people have rejected Christianity, politics have become our faith. And it is rending us.
But thanks be to God, the Bible gives us something better, something higher, something stronger than our dubious self- or political belief.
And biblical faith is necessary if we’re to persevere in hope to the end.
I look forward to exploring this with you Sunday.
