A Loaded Question
A Loaded Question
There’s a classic Far Side cartoon of a man standing in hell before two doors. One door is emblazoned with the words, “Damned if you do”, and the other, “Damned if you don’t.” Behind him the Devil looms menacingly, pitchfork poised at the man’s lower back, saying, “C’mon, c’mon—it’s either one or the other!”
Have you ever been asked a loaded question?
A loaded question isn’t sincere. It’s meant to manipulate or entrap you. Because of its presupposition, “Have you stopped kicking your dog?” is a loaded question. There’s no right answer. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Something similar was happening in this week’s Gospel when the Pharisees ask Jesus, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”
See you Sunday.
